Filter Press

Paint Stripping Home Page

It is essential that paint residues are removed regularly from the stripping solution. Gravity desludging is not possible. The characteristics of WR-STRIP, BJ-STRIP and AL-STRIP W hold the paint residues in suspension allowing it to be more easily removed by the filter press. Aim to keep solids below 10% and preferably below 5%. The filter press should be sited above the tank level and the filtered stripper returned to it by gravity.

As it is an expensive item, there is a tendency to undersize the filterpress. Typically a 10 x 50cm plate press or larger has been found suitable. It is necessary to equip it with the correct cloths to produce a sludge sufficiently dry as to enable pieces to be picked up. Even at this degree of dryness, the cake will be 50% liquid.

Depending upon throughput, the press is emptied every 2-3 days and the cake dropped into an open topped steel drum which when full may be sealed and labelled for disposal. In the interest of minimising solution loss and waste to be disposed of, it is important to make every effort to maximise the filter press efficiency.
filterpress operation Operation of a filterpress

  1. Press closed
  2. Liquid flows in
  3. Liquid is filtered through cloths (shown green)
and cleaned liquid is returned to the tank
  4. Flow is stopped and the press is opened.
    Filtercake falls into waste container
