Filter Cake Removal and Waste Disposal

Paint Stripping Home Page

The filter press should be sited so that an open topped barrel can be located underneath. When the press is opened the cake falls into the drum which can be sealed for disposal as Hazardous Waste. With the right operating conditions and filter cloths the cake should be about 50% solids (when dried). It will have a consistency similar to marzipan and be in pieces rather than a liquid sludge.

It is classified as Hazardous Waste and should only be disposed of by a suitably licensed contractor at an appropriate site. The waste code applicable to The List of Wastes (England) Regulations 2005 is 080113 - sludges from paint or varnish containing organic solvents or other dangerous substances.

Any business producing hazardous waste has a legal duty to register a premises where hazardous waste is produced. Hazardous Waste Regulations state that where hazardous waste is produced at, or removed from a premises, that premises must notify the Environment Agency, unless the premises is exempt. Each premises you register will be given a unique registration number or 'premises code'.

A waste disposal contractor will not be able to remove your waste without evidence of registration.

Before you call the Environment Agency or begin Registering Online, make sure you know the following information:

1. The number of employees you have (within a range)

2. Your Standard Industrial Classification Code (SIC 2003) - this is a code that states what activities you carry out on your site.

The SIC code recorded against your company name can be obtained free of charge from Companies House using Webcheck. This code is also given on your Certificate of VAT Registration
